Tavonne’s essay “Closer” was published in Gastronomica.

In the pilot episode of Behind the Prose, I interviewed Tavonne Carson, MFA. We analyzed her essay “Closer” which was published in Gastronomica, The Critical Journal of Food Studies.

We discuss how Tavonne employed imagery to transplant the reader to her grandmother’s kitchen on Thanksgiving, and we dissect her use of transitions to shift the reader from present to past to future, including a surprise metaphorical move that she wasn’t even aware of until I uncovered it on the show!

Listen to this episode to learn about her process. Then write your own food and family inspired essay for Gastronomica.
